Eidin, I hope you didn't misunderstand the article. I agree with you that many countries are much safer places to live than the United States. I do list the methods people can use to safeguard their personal property and their life if they are concerned at all about their well-being. I have felt safe in the four corners of the globe, and I do not believe that people should be so fearful of living abroad. I particularly loved my experiences living in France, so I know what you are talking about. It's unfortunate that many people do not get to participate in multinational, multicultural, and international living because of their fears. We really need to step outside of our comfort zones if we want to learn and appreciate each other. Thank you for your comments.

Wow! How typical of a very short sighted American! I remember in the '80s when after innocently marrying an American in Europe and then finding out eight years later that we had to move to the States! I cried for days and we finally moved thereI could only deal with staying there one week at a time for the first year - it may surprise some Americans to know that it's not Shangri-la to all foreigners. I was quite happy being Irish and living in Europe. Anyway, thankfully we now live in France and find it far safer than anywhere in the States!
The U.S is a nice place for a vacation but definitely not to live! Really scary!
Everyone should make their own decision and what works best for them is fine without narrow minded stereotyping a large number of countries.

Hi, Steve,
Thanks for the comments. I am still doing my due diligence on a number of foreign countries, and I'm quite sure things will change quite a bit before I finally decide. I'll be providing visitors with lots of information they could use as they research their options. By the way, I've just posted my interview with an expat currently living in and loving Panama. Click the following link if you want to listen in - http://retireoverseasnow.com/goc

Take care.

Angela,

Everywhere is different. I am obviously partial to Costa Rica since I work for a large expat development there. Panama has it's merits, don't get me wrong. I found El Valle to be most to my liking but I am a coastal kind of guy and the location was just too far inland for me. We have good friends that were robbed in Panama and I have other friends who were robbed in Costa Rica. People get robbed in the states as well, in fact I live most of the year in Key West and there is a significant crime and homeless problem on this tiny little island. I guess if I were homeless, I'd figure out how to get from somewhere in the northeast or midwest pretty quick come winter time.

Hi, Steve,
You make some interesting points. I, in fact, have recently completed an interview with someone I know who lives in Panama, and she loves it. She also mentions some reasons why she and her husband decided against Costa Rica. I'll be posting the interview in a few days. I hope you stop back to listen to it. I will be posting some facts on each of the countries you mentioned within the next 30 days. I am glad you are happy with your choice. Events are continually in flux, so we all have to do our due diligence before taking the leap. I, myself, have not chosen a favorite retirement location, and I am open to all possibilities.

Generally some good advice but your picks were a bit off the mark. Most important is the criteria for the person(s) looking to retire offshore. They need to first make a list of the things important to them, health care, accessibility, cost of living, sense of community, cost of acquisition, etc. My wife and I thought Mexico topped our list until the past 5 years. There were 5,680 murders there last year (2008) and it looks like the number will be even higher this year. It is also interesting to note that a HUGE number of Panamanians live on less than $2.00 per day. Some of us don't want to be surrounded by poverty. Have you ever been sitting in a restaurant eating while a homeless person stood outside the window looking in. We picked Costa Rica, not to say it is the best choice but you can see more about our opinion, including a comparison of Belize, Panama, Nicaragua, Mexico and Costa Rica on our blog at www.PacificLots.com/Costa-Rica-Blog/
